How Jan Tana Sunless spray tan works

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a colourless chemical that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The DHA causes a chemical reaction with the amino acids on the outermost layer of the skin. This chemical reaction takes 4 to 8 hours to become noticeable and lasts 5 to 8 days from time of application.

Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away on the surface of the skin. In fact every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new epidermis. This is why tans from sunless – or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade – as the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan.

What to expect when you arrive for a sunless spray tan?

When you book you will receive pre-tanning preparation instructions.

At the beauty salon, a trained Jan Tana Agent or Beauty Therapist will spray a thin layer of tanning solution evenly onto your body with a small spray tan machine.

You may stand in a costume, old underwear, disposable G-string or naked. Because of the low pressure, the equipment will not cause injury to eyes and ears. Sunless Tan dries almost instantly and you will be able to get dressed as soon as the spraying is complete.

You will receive post tanning instructions which includes no bathing / showering / swimming for at least 6 to 8 hours.

Jan Tana Agents may determine what they want to charge.  Jan Tana is an imported product of the highest quality and many years of research for the best natural looking tan, therefore it might appear more expensive than some shelf products manufactured in SA. 

The going rate throughout South Africa is around R350 to R450 per tan depending if its in the salon or mobile option.  In most cases mobile can be more because of travel cost.

Salons offer specials for group bookings, or if you book a series of tans – ask about their specials.

Is sunless tanning safe?

Yes, it is. The main ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), has been tested and approved for safety. When DHA is applied to the skin, it only penetrates the top layer of skin — it does not absorb into the body or bloodstream.

Do Spraytan's sunless tanning products contain fragrances?

Jan Tana has a new improved peach smell. Our products are designed for people with very sensitive skin with a pleasant smell.

Will Jan Tana Sunless Tan products stain my clothes or bed sheets?

Our sunless tanning products dry quickly and are water-based so it rarely transfers to clothes or bedding. If it does transfer, it can easily be washed in a normal rinse cycle and won't permanently stain or damage your clothes or bedding.

How long does a sunless tan last?

A Jan Tana Sunless tan will typically last 5-8 days. To expand the life of the tan, exfoliate thoroughly using our exfoliant prior to application. Make sure you moisturize generously each day after the application.

What if I always burn (never tan) in the sun. Will I be able to get a sunless tan?

Most definitely! If you have very fair skin, and always burn in the sun and therefore you have never been able to tan, you can achieve a sunless tan.

How can I maximize the shelf life of my sunless tanning product?

Any of our products should be used within 12 months of purchase. To maximise the shelf life of the product, keep the container closed tightly and keep it away from sunlight.

Is sunless tanning safe for pregnant women?

Our product is safe with no harmful ingredients, and we have spray tanned many women to look their best for photo shoots and special occasions.

If you are unsure, consult your physician first to get written permission prior to application to allow use of our sunless tanning products. 

Training of one therapist is included in any equipment purchase to ensure that the correct technique is used thereby ensuring perfect results. Courses are approximately 1 to 3 hours in duration, depending on personal experience, and you will need a model for the practical portion of the training.
